It's a popular recreation area, but now officials say it's increasingly being overrun with garbage

Sheriff Jim Raymond on Thursday, via the Franklin County Sheriff's Department Facebook and news release, is urging (and scolding!) area residents to quit using this popular beach as a dumping ground.

Carbody is about two miles north of the Battelle Labs (PNNL) on the Columbia River on the Pasco shoreline.

Over the years, it's seen its share of issues, a few years ago Franklin County banned target shooting after a landslide took out part of Columbia River Road, creating a new hillside that people would shoot into. Flying bullets was not considered safe.

Now, it's a garbage issue, according to the FCSO:

"The Carbody Beach area is turning into an absolute garbage dump. This is very disgusting and unacceptable behavior. This is an area that is often enjoyed by families and now has broken glass and trash everywhere. It is very heartbreaking to see this area get completely trashed due to sheer laziness. Pick up your trash people! If we catch you littering, don’t expect any warnings."

Not only have recreationists left behind their trash, but there is growing evidence citizens are dumping larger loads of household trash, pickup-sized loads.

According to the revised code of WA, littering fees can vary anywhere from $103 to $5,000, depending upon the size of the infraction.
